FARM STREET CHURCH

Farm Street Singers Vacancies

The Church of the Immaculate Conception
Farm Street, Mayfair

The famous church of the Immaculate Conception in the heart of Mayfair has a vacancy for a
tenor and for a baritone (or bass baritone) to join the team of leading professional singers
(SSSAATTBBB). The choir – known as the Farm Street Singers – sings for the Sunday 11am
Latin Mass, extra services at Christmas and Easter, some feast days and for numerous
weddings and funerals. Occasional recordings are made.

Profile

The Farm Street Singers are directed by both David Graham (Organist and Director of Music)
and Duncan Aspden (Associate Director of Music).

There is a long tradition of building a vibrant and expressive choir from operatically-trained
singers: past members include the dramatic soprano Susan Bullock.
While the current team echoes this practice, and includes soloists from Glyndebourne
and other European opera houses (alongside others who work primarily with leading professional choirs
such as the BBC Singers and the Monteverdi Choir), in recent years the emphasis
on ensemble skill has increased.

The successful applicants will therefore have first-class skills as a choral singer (including
excellent sight-reading and intonation), but will also have a voice with soloistic potential and
an imaginative musical presence.

Repertoire

The repertoire is large, unusual and eclectic. It encompasses sixteenth-century polyphony,
Viennese Classical composers, Romantics principally from France and Germany, and a wide
range of twentieth-century music. Several works have been commissioned in recent years.
Gregorian Chant also takes an important place in the liturgy.

Remuneration (as at October 2017)

• Weekly Sunday morning mass: £77.
Rehearsal 10-10:45; Mass 11-c12:15.The Sunday after Christmas is without music.
• Extra church services: £77 (more when the service is particularly long).
There are currently ten additional services per year: Advent 1st Sunday afternoon;
Immaculate Conception (8th December); Christmas eve; Christmas morning;
Ash Wednesday (twice); Maundy Thursday; Good Friday Afternoon;
Easter Saturday evening and the feast of St Ignatius (31st July).
• Special services (primarily weddings and funerals): £100.
• In the event that the music for special services is audio or video captured,
appropriate additional fees are paid.
• In addition, a small annual retainer is paid at Christmas time.

The total package would be worth around £7,000 to a singer available for every service.

Deputies

Our singers are all busy professionals, and it is expected that their career will prevent them
from being present at all services. The Singers are responsible for booking their own deputies
(from an approved list) for church services.

For specials, they simply notify their availability – deputies are booked for them.

Application process

CVs should be submitted to duncan.aspden309@gmail.com by 31 October 2017.
Auditions will primarily be held w/c 6 November; other times may be made available if necessary.
Some applicants may also be invited to deputise for one or more services,
for which normal fees will be paid.
