‘Master
we have worked hard all night long but have caught
nothing. Yet if you say so I will let down the nets.'
We
can think to ourselves how wonderful it must have
been to have Jesus right there beside you telling
you exactly what to do, and miss out on the fact
that the word of God is addressed to us right here
right now, in whatever is going on in our lives.
Are you aware of any situation in your life in
which you are putting a lot of energy, but it
does not seem to be bearing much fruit?
Could it be that Christ is inviting you to do
something differently, to throw your fishing net
into a different part of the sea?
It could be to a course of action, or it could
be to a change of attitude of heart for example
to be forgiving, courageous, generous or… what?
Pause
for a moment, now or whenever you have a few minutes,
and open your mind and heart to the inspiration
of God's spirit within you. Try not to think too
hard but allow something to emerge, ask Christ to
help you become aware
of whatever His invitation is to you
…
You
may feel that what comes to mind is too much for
you, but remember Peter's response, he fell at the
knees of Jesus and said “Leave me Lord; I am a sinful
man.” But hear Jesus respond to him and to you,
“Do not be afraid.”
This
is a small example of how we can reflect on the
word of God and come to see ever more clearly how
it is addressed to us in our everyday lives. If
you feel this approach could be helpful to you then
you may like to try a Jesuit Media Initiative called
‘Pray as you Go', it combines scripture, music and
some questions for reflection in a ten-minute prayer
session every day. You can play it or download it
from their site with one click and use it at home,
at work, or on the move with an MP3 player. It has
been helping thousands of people across the world
to become more aware of the presence of God in their
lives, why don't you try it? Or perhaps suggest
it to someone that you feel might like it? There
are business size cards available at all the entrances
to the church take some away with you and hand them
out ‘…from now on I will make you fishes of men'…
Christ.
