GOD'S
OWN FEAST: THE TRINITY
A
quick glance at the main feasts in the Church's calendar
might lead the unwary spectator to jump to the conclusion
that the central thrust of our faith was humanity in its
historical existence. Nearly all the great festivals from
Christmas to Easter are devoted to recalling moments in
time when the infinite mercy of God concerns himself with
the creation and salvation of the human race. The great
feast of Pentecost brought the series to a triumphant
conclusion, with the descent of the Holy Ghost upon our
Lady and the apostles and the subsequent birthday of the
church.
But
is that really all that can be said or needs to be said
about the life of God ? And if God is so anthropocentric,
is that not a good enough reason for us to follow in his
footsteps and take the line that if the interest is directed
so firmly and unequivocally in our direction, should not
ours be also? Has God no other life, no other motive for
self articulation as Father, Son and Holy Spirit except
us? Has he no life of his own? Again is the religion Christ
taught and founded deprived of precisely that dimension
that lies at the very heart of all religion, namely the
worship of God, without the desire to be forever asking
the incessant question, 'What is there in all this for
me?' The fact of the matter is that God's creation and
redemption of the world was not something he was drawn
to out of boredom. Before he began the work of creating,
God was in his three Persons totally rich and full and
self content, in the total presence of Son and Spirit.
lt would be impossible to imagine a fuller life than that
enjoyed by the three persons of the godhead. In book XI
of his Confessions Saint Augustine wrestles with precisely
this question. God himself made time and there is no before
and after in God. The motive which led Him to create in
the first place was neither boredom, nor any need on the
part of God but the desire to share with others out of
love something of the immensity of his own being. Again,
a truth, which over concern with the needs and demands
of others tends to obscure is the simple fact that we
are worshipping beings, we were made to worship God and
in that mysterious action to rise to our true stature
and deepest need at the same time. The psalms are often
simply paeans of praise to God 'Bless the Lord o my soul'
[psalm 103] In the life to come we may be a little surprised
to discover that the life of
the blessed in heavens is one of Praise, praise, praise.
All God directed to God by hearts full of peace, knowledge
and love.
